Therapy Approaches

Therapy is not one-size-fits-all. The approaches I offer have been carefully chosen through decades of clinical experience and advanced specialist training in trauma therapy. Different nervous systems respond to different modalities—and part of our work together is discovering what feels safe, effective, and sustainable for you.

Key Takeaways: Choosing the Right Therapy

  • Both top-down therapies (working with thoughts and conscious awareness) and bottom-up approaches (working with the deep nervous system) can be helpful.

  • Traditional talking therapies can provide insight — but trauma often requires approaches that work directly with the body and deeper brain systems.

  • Trauma-informed therapies such as Deep Brain Reorienting Therapy, Internal Family Systems Therapy, and Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR) Therapy are designed to work gently yet deeply with stored trauma responses.

Choosing the Right Therapeutic Approach

Each person’s nervous system encodes experiences differently.

When trauma is deeply patterned, people often say:

  • “I don’t know where this reaction comes from.”

  • “There isn’t a clear memory.”

  • “This feels older than logic.”

This is because trauma does not only live in the thinking brain. Many survival responses form long before conscious awareness.

Modern body-centered and neurobiologically informed trauma therapies work safely with these deeper layers—supporting regulation, integration, and healing from the bottom up.

My role is to provide a careful assessment, explain the options clearly, and help you choose the therapeutic approach that best fits your history and goals.

Core Therapy Approaches

Below are the main trauma-informed therapies I use in my practice in Dubai. These are often integrated thoughtfully rather than used in isolation.

Internal Family Systems (IFS) Therapy

A compassionate, parts-based therapy that helps heal inner conflicts shaped by trauma, attachment patterns, and life experience.

IFS supports greater self-leadership, emotional regulation, and relief from long-standing shame or internal criticism.

EMDR Therapy

An evidence-based trauma therapy that helps the brain reprocess distressing and traumatic memories safely.

EMDR is widely recognized for treating PTSD and can also support anxiety, phobias, and complex trauma.

Deep Brain Reorienting (DBR)

A neurobiologically informed trauma therapy working with early threat and shock responses that often sit beneath conscious awareness.

DBR supports healing at the level of the brainstem and nervous system—particularly helpful for attachment trauma and early developmental shock.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • How do I know which therapy approach is right for me?

During your initial consultation, I carry out a careful clinical assessment and explain the differences between approaches such as IFS, EMDR, and Deep Brain Reorienting. Together, we consider your history, nervous system patterns, and goals to determine what feels safest and most effective for you.

  • What is the difference between talking therapy and trauma-informed therapy?

Traditional talking therapies primarily work with thoughts and conscious awareness. Trauma-informed therapies work more deeply with the nervous system and stored survival responses. When reactions feel automatic or “older than logic,” bottom-up approaches such as DBR or EMDR can help access and resolve these deeper layers.

  • Can therapy help if I don’t remember a specific traumatic event?

Yes. Many trauma responses form before conscious memory develops. Therapies such as Deep Brain Reorienting and IFS do not require detailed recall of events. Instead, we work gently with present-moment body responses and emotional patterns.

  • Are these therapies safe?

Safety and nervous system regulation are central to my approach. Sessions move at a pace that supports stability and containment. Trauma processing is never forced, and we build internal resources before working with deeper material.

  • Do you integrate different therapy approaches?

Yes. While each modality has a distinct framework, I often integrate approaches thoughtfully. For example, IFS may support internal stability before EMDR or DBR processing. Integration allows therapy to be tailored rather than rigid.

  • Do you offer trauma therapy in Dubai for complex PTSD?

Yes. I specialise in working with complex trauma, dissociation, early attachment wounding, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Therapy is offered in-person at First Psychiatry Clinic in Dubai and may also be available online depending on suitability.
